East Barnet Music Centre
- National Festival of Music for Youth Band 2 represented Barnet at this prestigious event on Tuesday 26 February in central London wher they performed three tunes at the festival. They walked onto stage playing the theme tune to James Bond, with the boys all wearing their sunglasses. When we had finished this tune we played Men of Harlech and this was followed by Don't cha by the Pussycat Dolls. All the girls wore feather boas. When we had finished the hall was covered in pink feathers!.

Meet the Teacher: David Morris – Band 1
We are delighted to welcome David Morris as the new conductor of Band 1 this term. David is a wind specialist and Masters graduate of Trinity College of Music ("a truly life-changing opportunity").
David teaches for Barnet and was until recently Secretary of the Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain and remains a regular contributor to its magazine. David has long experience as a project and commercial manager, ("which has come in surprisingly handy conducting Band 1...") and is currently Label Consultant for the Clarinet Classics CD company.
An experienced choral singer, David has performed in all the main London concert halls and was an assistant conductor for the Chandos Chamber choir, regularly conducting at St Bartholomew the Great in Clerkenwell. David lives in Bounds Green with his wife and four-year old daughter, is a keen hill walker and tennis player and, as an antidote to most of the above, plays bass in a fledgling rock band.
Meet the Teacher: Hannah Larkin – Young Music Makers and African Drumming
After obtaining my degree in Music Education from Reading University, I became a class teacher in Barnet. I have been teaching at Queenswell Junior School since 2001, where I have been responsible for music, the development of enrichment and the creative curriculum.
My musical career began at the age of two, where I began learning the violin, attending a Suzuki school for strings. At seven, I went to study with Peter Watmough with whom I took my Associated Board Examinations. Whilst attending Dame Alice Owen’s Secondary School, I became fascinated with percussion, joining the Concert Band under the infamous Bernie Bean.
After seeing African Drumming being performed at a Barnet Primary Music Festival, I began to learn djembi at the Akwaaba Galleries in Camden. I was fortunate enough to visit Ghana twice where I was able to further my knowledge of African instruments, songs and rhythms, as well as teach in schools in Accra.
I now enjoy playing violin and viola for several London ensembles and theatre companies, playing kit with my band and, of course, African drumming at the London Drumming Academy
Meet the Teacher: Frank Lambert – Junior Brass and Jazz Group
It's a real thrill for me to get back to the grass roots of music making. After studying jazz at a music school in Newcastle on Tyne I spent twenty years working as a professional trumpet player doing gigs all over the World. I actually went round the World seven times on the QE2! It was while I was on the high seas that I started to be called upon to arrange for the ship bands, which led me into composition and now I spend most of my time locked in a studio, writing music and recording, not just the trumpet parts, but also the trombone, french horn and tuba. It's a very noisy house!
At East Barnet Music Centre I teach a beginners brass group and, for a very intense and concentrated half hour, conduct a jazz group. It's amazing how much they accomplish in such a short time. It's fascinating watching these kids growing into musicians and I feel privileged to be a part of it.
